The right passport-size photo is important for your Brazil visa or passport application.

If you're applying for a travel document to Brazil, you need a passport-size photo that meets specific rules. Getting this right is important because it can affect whether your application is successful.

Fill me in

We've put together a guide to help you know exactly what the Brazilian government requires for your passport and visa photos. This way, you can be sure your application has what it needs. Keep reading to learn all about these requirements.

Guidelines for your Brazil passport/visa photo

Your photo for a Brazilian passport or visa must meet specific requirements that are important for both physical and electronic applications.

  • Recent photo: The photo should be recent and taken within the last 6 months so that it accurately reflects your current appearance.

  • Photo dimensions: The old photo size of 50mm x 70mm has now been replaced by 51mm x 51mm (or 2” x 2”, which aligns with US standards). Your face should occupy 60-70% of the photo or measure 22mm-35 mm from the top of your head to the bottom of your chin. The image should be borderless.

  • Quality: The photo must be in color and of high resolution, and printed on quality paper. For online applications, the file size should not exceed 1 MB and the photo should be at least 600 x 600 pixels.

  • Background: The background needs to be plain white without any patterns or shadows.

  • Head position: Your head should be level and centered in the frame as you face the camera directly.

  • Facial expression: You need to maintain a neutral expression with your eyes open and mouth closed.

  • Lighting: The lighting must be even and should prevent shadows or glare on both your face and in the photo's background.

  • Eyeglasses: Eyelasses should not be worn. If you must wear them for medical reasons, you’ll need to provide a medical statement signed by a healthcare professional. Any glasses worn must have thin frames and should not cover the eyes or cause glare. Tinted lenses and sunglasses are not acceptable.

  • Head coverings: Head coverings are not allowed unless worn daily for religious or medical purposes. It should not hide any part of your face.

  • Clothing: Wear everyday clothing that contrasts with the white background. Religious attire is allowed only for those who wear it daily. Avoid low-cut necklines.

  • Jewelry: Keep the jewelry subtle and make sure it doesn’t change how your face looks.

Passport & visa photos for infants and children

Taking passport and visa photos for infants and children involves specific considerations beyond those for adults. While the general rules about photo quality, head positioning and background still apply, there are additional guidelines that you should keep in mind.

  • Open and clear eyes: It’s important that the child's eyes are open and visible. For infants, catching the right moment when their eyes are open might require some patience. Glasses should be avoided unless medically necessary. They should not cause glare or hide the eyes.

  • Facial expression: Though the rule for adults is a neutral expression, children and especially infants get a bit more flexibility. The aim is to capture as calm and natural a look as possible.

  • Simple clothing: Dress the child in plain, everyday clothing. Anything that obscures oart of the face, like hats or pacifiers, should be avoided. If religious headwear is part of the child’s daily attire, it's allowed as long as it reveals the full face from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin.

  • No visible support: If you need to support an infant or child during the photo shoot, your supporting hands or any support mechanisms must not appear in the photo.

  • Clutter-free environment: The child should be the only focus in the photo, with no extra items or props included.

If infants are unable to sit or stand for their photo, place them on a plain white sheet and take the photo from above.
